Tuesday 5th November 2019: King of Rods

The highly charged fiery energy of the (16) Tower which ushers in sudden change through the lightning bolt, which we saw on Sunday, having fed on the airy element present in yesterday’s Five of Swords, now renews itself and manifests in the King of Rods, who combines the fiery element of his suit with the airy element of his courtly office. In contrast to the Page of Rods, the King of Rods looks back (like the hermetic figure in yesterday’s Five of Swords) and draws his inspiration from what has gone before. That is to say, he draws his wisdom, competence and authority from the experiences of the past. However, he does so in order to work constructively in the present and for the future, as is suggested by the fresh leaves sprouting on his wand. The King of Rods sits on a throne decorated with lions to emphasise his rulership of the element of fire, but his other familiar friend is the salamander, which reminds us that the King of Rods is an agent of change through the application of fire. This week, the spiritual transformation that the (16) Tower calls us to is taken by the King of Rods and turned towards manifesting change and transformation in the outer world. The King, like the salamander, lives in the alchemical fire, but brings its transforming spirit out into every corner of his kingdom.
