25th Sunday After Trinity (5) Hierophant

In this long Trinity season we need to borrow a Sunday from the short Epiphany season and insert it between the 24th Sunday after Trinity and the Sunday next before Advent, which is commonly known as “Stir Up Sunday” from the opening words of the collect. That Sunday is named as the 25th Sunday in the Book of Common Prayer, but this year it is actually the 26th Sunday, as Stir Up Sunday is always the last Sunday before Advent. So the collect for today is taken from the 5th Sunday in Epiphany, and the arcana for the week is the (5) Hierophant.

The Collect

O Lord, we beseech thee to keep thy Church and household continually in thy true religion; that they who do lean only upon the hope of thy heavenly grace may evermore be defended by thy mighty power; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Old Testament Reading

In the day of thy power shall the people offer thee free-will offerings with an holy worship: the dew of thy birth is of the womb of the morning

The Lord sware, and will not repent: Thou art a Priest forever after the order of Melchisidech.

Psalm 110: 3-4

New Testament Reading

Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, long-suffering; forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man hath a quarrel against any; even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.

Colossians 3: 12-13

Liturgical Affirmation

All things have their season, and in their times all things pass under heaven. Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.
