An overcast sky (such as we have here in Hiroshima this morning), a ruined castle and three spilled cups suggest a sense of loss; loss of the brightness of the (19) Sun, the losses we incur with the passage of time with its accompanying decay and destruction, and the loss of the things that we had hoped or expected to enjoy now or in the future. As this is the arcana of the cups, this loss is something that is felt, or rather, we feel a sense of loss and perhaps of self-reproach, even if all is not actually lost. There is a certain degree of delighting in and nurturing one’s own melancholy. The feeling behind today’s card accentuates the melancholic aspect of yesterday’s (18) Moon and the restlessness with which it is associated.
