Today, as we prepare for Christmas, the focus is very much on getting done whatever needs to be done in time for the festivities of the morrow. Today Knights such as he may be found toiling in kitchens or in shopping streets, or hidden away from prying eyes with wrapping paper and sellotape, or simply plodding back to their hometown to be with their family and loved ones for the season. They may also be those humble knights who deliver parcels or supplies to your door in time for Christmas. Whatever their labour, they go about it without fanfare but with patience, stamina, attention to detail and a quiet and dignified authority of those who know what needs to be done and how to get it done. They understand that work is itself a form of prayerful devotion. Without them, Christmas would not be so merry.
